- Rabi-Al-Awwal is the third month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar.
- The word Rabi means “spring”. The word Awwal means “first”. Since the lunar calendar is ten days shorter than the solar calendar the lunar months circulate through different seasons. That is why Rabi- Awwal is not always in spring.
- According to most scholars, the birth of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) took place in this month.
- The Blessed Prophet (ﷺ) was born fifty to fifty five days after the incident of the elephants, on Monday.
- The exact date of the blessed Prophet’s (ﷺ) birth is not 100 percent certain. The famous statement amongst Muslims is that the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) was born on the 12 th of Rabi Al-Awwal.
- During the birth of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) there were many miracles that occurred. One of them is that Sayyidituna Amina saw a light emanating from her which illuminated the palaces of Syria. (Musnad Ahmed)
- On the seventh day after the birth of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) (it was still the month of Rabi Al-Awwal), his grandfather Abdul Muttalib performed his Aqiqah and invited the Quraysh.
- Abdul Muttalib then proposed to name the child Muhammad.
- The name Muhammad means the one who is praised.
- When he was asked why he kept such a name that no one kept before, He said, “I want Allah (swt) in the heavens and His creation on earth to praise him.
- The day of departure of the blessed Prophet’s (ﷺ) migration to Madinah (Hijrah) was the first of Rabi Al-Awwal.
- Quba is a city 3 miles south of Madina. The blessed Prophet (ﷺ) first arrived and stayed in Quba.
- He arrived in Quba on Monday the 12 th of Rabi Al-Awaal in the fourteenth year of Prophethood. He stayed with the tribe of Banu Amr bin Auf.
- The blessed Prophet (ﷺ) constructed the very first Masjid of Islam in this town of Quba, and performed the first Friday Prayer there.
- After the completion of Jummah the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) mounted his camel and set out in the direction of Madinah with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (r.a.). A vast number of Ansaar armed with their swords were walking to the left, right, and rear of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ). This was a tradition of the Arabs that they would guard a guest of high caliber.
- Every resident of Madinah strongly wished that they could host the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) however the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) said that this camel is under the command of Allah let it go wherever it sits down that will be according to the will of Allah.
- The she-camel of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) settled in a vacant lot in the locality of Banu Najjar. This empty lot became the area where the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) constructed his Masjid.
- Banu Najjar were relatives of the Prophet (ﷺ) through his grandmother Salma, the wife of Abdul Muttalib.
- Sayyiduna Abu Ayoob Al-Ansari's house was close to the lot hence he was honored to host the blessed Prophet (ﷺ).
- The arrival of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) was one of the greatest and extremely emotional moments of Islamic history. After all the pain, torture and rejection that the Muslims had endured, the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) was entering a city whose residents were extremely happy and grateful for his arrival. The environment was full of love and radiance. Women and children were singing poems of joy, everyone was smiling and trying their best to attain a glimpse of the blessed Prophet(ﷺ).
- Sayyiduna Anas (r.a.) said that when the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) entered Madinah everything was illuminated (Tirmidhi). That is why sometimes people refer to Madinah as al Madinah Al- Munawarrah. (The Illuminated City).
- The darkest day of Islamic history also exists in this month of Rabi Al-Awwal. The 12 th of Rabi Al-Awwal was the day the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) passed away.
Surah Mutaffifin
- The word مُطَفِّفِيْن is derived from the word تَطْفِيْفٌ which means to have stingyness or to give less than what is due.
- In the first six verses Allah (swt) warns cheaters. That when they take for themselves they make sure they take their complete share and due right. However when it comes time to give and fulfill the rights of others they cut corners. The background of revelation of these verses is that when the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) arrived in Madinah. The people of Madinah dealt according to volume so they would measure, weigh, and then sell the merchandise. They would cheat their customers by taking in full and giving less. These verses were revealed as a warning.
- Abdullah bin Abbas said these were the first verses revealed in Madinah.
- Although the ayah uses the words weight and measure the Scholars of Tafseer explain that the warning is not restricted to business dealings. Rather whenever it comes to giving something its due right, Islam teaches us to make sure to give it in full. This relates to us in many ways, for example, our parents make sure to provide us with the best. We also make sure to ask them for the best that we want. Therefore it’s necessary that when it is time for us to give back to them, meaning when they ask us to do something we make sure to give back in full. Another thing to keep in mind is that we ask Allah for all sorts of things and Allah also looks out for us in the best way possible, however we need to ask ourselves when we offer our Salah to Allah do we offer it the best way possible?
- In verses 7 and 18 there is mention of the words سِجِّين and عِلِّيِّن respectively. These are two places, the first being the place where all the souls and actions of people who disobey Allah are gathered. The second is where all the souls and actions of righteous people who obey Allah are gathered.
- Allah (swt) concludes the chapter by describing the rewards of the righteous and describing them to be different from the wrong doers. Just because they were different the righteous were made fun of by the wrong-doers. Allah says that these people may be laughing now, but on the Day of Judgment the righteous will be the ones laughing at the wrong-doers.
- We learn a great lesson from the above verse. Which is that while being Muslim we may face difficulty by Non-Muslims either by them making fun of us or anything else. Sometimes we may feel that we cannot enjoy what they can. However Allah reminds us that our religion is correct and soon we will get to enjoy much better things that will be exclusively for us. So hold strong to Islam and its only a matter of time until we will get the last life.
