Topics: The Prophet (ﷺ)’s lineage and Surah Inshiqaq

• The following is the lineage of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ). If someone memorizes this, they will get two prizes:
  • Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abdu Munaf bin Qusayy bin Kilab bin Murrah bin Ka ‘b bin Luayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik bin Nadir bin Kinana bin Khuzaymah bin Mudrika bin Ilyas bin Mudhr bin Nizar bin Ma ‘d bin Adnan.
• The blessed Prophet (ﷺ) ‘s mother’s name was Amina. Her lineage links with the blessed Prophet (ﷺ)’s father lineage. Her lineage is Amina bint Wahb bin Abdu Munaf bin Zuhra bin Kilab.
• The blessed Prophet (ﷺ) belonged to the honorable tribe of Quraysh. The name Quraysh was the surname of one the grandfathers of the blessed Prophet (ﷺ), Fihr
• The Prophet (ﷺ)’s lineage is also called Hashmi after his great grandfather Hashim.
• Every tribe had assumed a responsibility. The responsibility of Banu Hashim was to host the pilgrims of Hajj.
• Hashim means to mash something. Hashim used to mash pieces of bread in meat and soup and would distribute it to others to eat.
• Hashim, enroute to Syria, passed by Yathrib (also known as Madinah). There he married a woman by the name of Salma bint Amr. After a few days he had to continue his journey to Palestine. He planned to return to Madinah however passed away in Gaza, Palestine. Meanwhile Salma was expecting a child. A child with a few strands of white hair was born. Due to those few strands of white hair, he was named Shayba (one with gray hair).
• None of Hashim’s relatives in Makkah knew about the birth of Shayba. Eight years later, Muttalib found out about the birth of Shayba and decided to go and bring him to Makkah to live with him. When Muttalib arrived in Makkah everyone mistakenly thought that Shayba was his servant. Therefore, they started to call him Abdul Muttalib (The Servant of Muttalib).
• Abdul Muttalib grew up to be a very handsome man and a leading figure of Quraysh.
• He was the chief of Quraysh and oversaw the tribe’s trade caravans.
• He was famous for his generosity and was called “The Generous” and since he would give his food to the needy and leftovers to the birds and animals, he was also called “The feeder of men on earth and of beasts and birds on the mountaintops”.
• Abdul Muttalib was also responsible for rediscovering the Zamzam The location of the well had been forgotten because the tribe of Jurhum had covered it when they were being exiled from Makkah.
• One night in a dream he was shown the location of where he was supposed to dig. When he went to the Ka ‘bah the next day he began digging and the water of Zamzam started to flow again.

Tafseer Section: Surah Inshiqaq

• Inshiqaq literally means to split. The opening verses, up to verse number 5 reminds all of us about the journey that we are on, which is the journey to the afterlife.
• After that Allah in the 6th verse points out to all of us that:

  “O mankind, indeed, you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.”

• This verse is teaching us that we are all working hard, and every human being will work hard in this world. No matter what, we will work hard, when it comes to school, games, sports, even bad people work hard to do bad things.
• That is why Allah kept the verse very general that ‘All of you are working hard toward your lord’, this means that regardless of what hard work you are doing you are moving closer and closer to the Day of Judgment.
• Then Allah wanted to bring our attention to something more specific. As you are working hard for whatever you are doing, remember that everything is being recorded. On the Day of Judgment all those deeds will be brought forth and there will only be two groups of people that day. One will be that group which will be handed their book of deeds in their right They will be fortunate and happy that their hard work was in the correct direction, and it paid off.
• However, there will be another group of people who will be scared on that day and will try to hide their hands behind their backs and will be handed their books behind their These people will be sad on that day. They worked hard as well but their hard work went towards doing those things which Allah disliked. Therefore, they will regret everything they did.
• The lesson that we need to learn from this is that we are all working hard and will continue to work hard. However, we need to make sure that a part of the hard work that we do in our day is dedicated to Allah. For example, when we play or do something fun, every day we make sure we do that properly. We have fun and try to play the best we can. Now we will also pray Salah, we need to make sure we try our hardest to pray Salah the best way we can.
• Allah concludes the chapters with a reminder, that the only people who truly work hard and their effort will be valued are those people who believe and do good deeds. May Allah (swt) make us all from them Ameen.
